Tapes ‘n Tapes: Walk it Off (2008)
First off, the Tapes ‘n Tapes debut album The Loon is a fantastic disc! What a refreshing crisp album. After first gaining popularity in the blogosphere world, Tapes n’ Tapes have a lot of live up to on Walk It Off. While they may not have achieved another diamond in the ruff, they still have managed to keep me entertained from track 1 all the way until track 12’s gutsy “The Dirty Dirty”. This album is not as well-rounded as “The Loon”; they have not retained the uniqueness of moving from a fast paced polka, to a gut wrenching blues riff, to a melodic ballad. I would have also liked to hear a lot more jazzy pots and pans on this album, which made The Loon such a pleasure to listen to.
What they do give, is what I love about the underground music scene right now. A fresh, explorative, melodic adventure that we haven’t seen since the 1960’s. I get excited and hopeful that the mainstream music industry is getting back to putting out musical treasures, as opposed to the over-produced garbage that is played on mainstream radio. Walk It Off is a testament of the new sound of garage band rock. “Hang Them All”, “Demon Apple”, and “George Michael” give me newfound excitement that things are starting to turn around. Tapes ‘n Tapes have proved, with songs like “Anvil” and “Conquest”, that they are not just an Internet phenom, but rather an talented band with a bright future.
